January 23 CTRL+ENTER to send a message, NO!I don't know how many times I have pressed CTRL+ENTER to NOT send a message only to have it sent. CTRL+ENTER has a meaning in Word (add a page) so occasionally by reflex I try to use it in an email to unfortunate results. Today in Outlook 2007, this dialog appeared:
Thank you people who write this product. This is just the kind of tiny improvement that saves everyone time and effort. May 09 Nice Error MessageI know that we database people beat that whole standard date format thing into the ground, but I think the programmer that programmed this error message is taking the date format thing a bit too far. At the very least date formats should match.
And let's face it, unless I was a programmer, I might not know what 19891006 was, especially if I was used to MM/DD/YYYY format (and I certainly wouldn't care!) Speak to users in their language, and speak to computers in theirs, please... (and yes I know that one main thing that makes being a relational programmer far easier than a UI programmer is that we mainly have to appease computers and tools. UI programmers have to appease humans...not an easy thing to do, since people like me are always around to complain, huh? :)
April 05 This should end global warming...Apple launches software to run Windows XP on Intel-based Macs
Also, google news search: http://news.google.com/news?q=apple+mac+xp
This would actually have been the worlds best April Fools gag, but I think it is actually true.
What was the global warming title about? This is the kind of thing you expected wouldn't happen until a certain place froze over. July 08 Awesome presentation on utilities...I have made it clear for sometime that I am gadget happy. It is true, I like small things that keep my mind from having to think about SQL for a while. This presentation from Scott Hanselman is not that kind of presentation. It is about gadget programs that help you become more and more productive. It has changed my habits an incredible amount in just a few days: http://mediaserver.aspsoft.com/blog/ScottHanselmanPresenting10UtilitiesIn10Minutes.aspx The first four utilities are just fantastic for anyone, and let's be real, if you don't have 10 minutes to watch a little presentation, you are heart attack bound my friend. And just to be clear, these four utilities are not just for programmers, so if you are one of the poor saps who has wandered over here from some other MSN Spaces site because I frequently update my blog, this my friend is a blog for you. You can watch his presentation in only four minutes. My favorite: SlickRun. I had a ton of batch files for launching browsers, programs, etc, all replaced by this tool. A close second, Windows Desktop Search. I originally had said "bah" to the desktop search thing, but the other day I couldn't find some code I wanted to find, and the regular search in Windows is slower than a cashier at Wal-Mart when you are the fiftieth customer in line on the only register open of the five hundred they spent good money to construct. Found the code and saved a great deal of time looking for it. So get out there and start watching and downloading! June 16 History Lesson: (For me too!)As I start to get older (shhh, don't let anyone know!) it starts to feel like everything has happened in my professional lifetime. It hasn't. I was reading a RSS from Microsoft Watch entitled: 'Monad' Scripting Shell Unlikely to Debut in Longhorn' which linked me to a Channel 9 thread and then that linked my to a wikipedia article about Adam Osborne. I had not even really heard of it (and I have a Computer Science degree, though it is from a public school!) You learn something every day. Note: this is not an endorcement of reading Microsoft Watch for your authoritative Microsoft information. It is an interesting place to see news, but take everything you read with a grain of salt, even this blog :) |
